당시 SF 영화의 주류나 마찬가지던 괴물 외계인 일색에서 탈피하여 진지하고 사색적인 내용을 담은 영화.
1950년대들어 질적 성숙기에 접어든 SF문학의 영향에 힘입은 바가 큰 것으로, 지구인 과학자에게 도움을 요청하는 우호적인 외계인이라든가, 원자력의 평화적인 이용가능성 등이 등장한다.
